Travel New Delhi Detail

Delhi is officially called the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the capital of India. Delhi was once a part of the Punjab province and maintained its historical and cultural links with Punjab and Doab. The population of Delhi is about 16.3 million in 2011, thus being the second most populous city in India and the third one in the world. Throughout its history, Delhi has been the capital of many kingdoms and empires, and has been ruled, looted, and reconstructed several times, especially in the Middle Ages.

The National Capital Territory and its metropolitan area are given special status 'national capital' under the 69th Amendment of the Indian Constitution in 1991. The national capital region consists of neighboring cities which are Faridabad, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Neharpar (Greater Faridabad), Greater Noida, Bahadurgarh, Sonepat, Panipat, Karnal, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Rewari, Baghpat, Meerut, Alwar, Bharatpur, and other cities. As a federal territory, the Delhi government today is more akin to a state with the legislature, the supreme court, and the Council of Ministers headed by the Premier. New Delhi is jointly managed by the Indian federal government and the government of Delhi and it is the metropolis of the Delhi National Capital Territory.
